GOOD NEWS WELFARE SOCIETY, KALGHATGI

Good News Welfare Society,Kalghatagi, was started by Rev.Fr. P. J. Jacob, the then Parish Priest of Tumarikoppa. He was also an Ex-MLA of Kalghatagi Constituency. He was doing a lot of social work those days. He gathered like-minded people and started the Good News Welfare Society. He got the Society registered in the year 1981. The Society bought some good pieces of land in order to establish various educational institutions. Fr. Jacob started Om Mariya Prasanna Mahila Mandal Grihini Training Centre, Good News Independent Arts & Commerce P. U. College, and Good News Welfare Society’s Arts & Commerce First Grade College. Using his influence he got the educational institutions registered with the concerned education departments and got grant in aid for the Good News PU College & Good News Degree College. He handed over the institutions to The Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel on 06.06.2000. Rev. Bro. Abraham Pralel & Rev. Bro. Niju Thomas were the first batch of Brothers who arrived in Kalghatagi. Montfort Sisters or Daughters of Wisdom also joined the Brothers at the same time. The Brothers have been managing the Good News Welfare Society and its institutions from then on.

  1. Good News Independent Arts & Commerce P. U. College

Good News Independent Arts & Commerce P. U. College was started in the year 1984. It is affiliated to Karnataka P. U. Board, Bangalore. So far, 39 batches have passed out of this institution and we are in the 41st year. This college was with the Degree College and it got bifurcated in the year 1992. The college got the grant in aid in the year 1995. All the lecturers and non-teaching staff were paid by the Government. The P. U. College was in the same campus as the Degree College till 2002. When the present building was built, it was shifted this side. The government stopped sanctioning teaching posts from 2014. As on this day, we have just 4 staff members paid by the government. For rest of the posts, the management is forced to appoint teaching staff in order to manage the classes. At present there are 572 students, 15 teaching staff and 3 non-teaching staff. Since the fees collections are minimal and very meagre, we have been depending on Province contributions to pay the salaries and to maintain the institution.

  1. Good News Welfare Society’s Arts & Commerce First Grade College

Good News Welfare Society’s Arts & Commerce First Grade College was started in the year 1986. The staff got grant in aid in the year 1989. All the teaching and non-teaching staff members were paid by the government. After 2015 the government is not sanctioning the teaching posts. At present there are 5 staff members paid by the government. As for rest of the posts, we are forced to appoint private lecturers to manage the classes. As the fees collections are very meagre, we are not in a position to pay the salaries and maintain the college. We request the Provincial Administration for finance to manage various expenses. At present there are 165 students in the degree college. There are 12 teaching staff and 5 non – teaching staff in the college.

  1. Montfort Play School
