History of the Province

The Bengaluru Province was established in 2019 as part of a reorganization of the former Trichy and Yercaud Provinces. Bro. George P. J. was appointed as the first Provincial Superior and assumed office on 25 March 2019. Three years later, in 2022, Bro. George Padikara succeeded him. In 2025, the leadership mandate passed to Bro. Jenny Kuriakose, who took charge on 25 March 2025.

The Province comprises four countries: India, Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar and the Philippines. Most institutions are located in India—primarily in Tamil Nadu, with the remainder in Karnataka, particularly in the state capital, Bengaluru. The Provincial House is situated in Bengaluru, sharing a campus with a school. In Tamil Nadu, most institutions are concentrated in Chennai and its surrounding areas.

The Philippines is a newly established mission. The Malaysia–Singapore unit, once an independent Province, was integrated into Bengaluru Province in 2019 due to a decline in numbers.

As of 2025, the Province counts approximately 77 Professed Brothers, including 10 in temporary vows. A number of Brothers are past retirement age but remain active and engaged in various responsibilities. The Province administers 28 institutions organized into 20 communities.

We are engaged mostly in education; even the socially engaged centres are elementary and practical education oriented. There is one school for the hearing impaired at Belagola, near the royal city of Mysore in south Karnataka. A Technical Institute at St. Thomas Mount, Chennai, offers a number of formal and non-formal courses. There are also two university colleges, both in Karnataka: a counselling college in Bengaluru and an arts and science college in Kalghatagi, near the metropolitan city of Hubli in north Karnataka. Our only social service centre is in Chennai, catering to people in various locations of the city.

Vocations are not that numerous. We have a Juniorate in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, where about twenty Juniors are attending high and higher secondary classes. We also have a few candidates at various stages of initial formation.

While our numbers may be modest, our mission remains steadfast: to form minds, touch hearts and empower lives through education and compassionate service. With faith and dedication, we continue to respond to the needs of society, trusting that our commitment will inspire and attract future labourers for the Lord’s vineyard.
