MONTFORT COLLEGE, BENGALURU
The Montfort College Society, established in 1984, emerged as a visionary response to India’s growing need for quality higher education, particularly in the field of emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Founded by the Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel, the Society was rooted in the belief that true education must nurture the mind, heart, and spirit. Its founding vision emphasized holistic education—integrating academic excellence with emotional intelligence, ethical grounding, and social responsibility.
At a time when India was witnessing significant sociology-cultural transformations—marked by the gradual disintegration of traditional family systems, rising individualism, and increasing mental health concerns—the Montfort College Society recognized the urgent need for trained professionals in counseling and mental health care. With foresight and courage, the Society ventured into the then uncharted field of professional counselor education, becoming a pioneer in this domain.
Responding to this critical gap, Bro. Mathew Pannathanath began conducting short-term training programmes in counseling, which immediately drew widespread interest from across the country. Encouraged by the overwhelming response and the visible demand for structured counsellor’s education, the Montfort College Society launched a Post Graduate Diploma in Holistic Psychological Counselling in 1995.
After three years of sustained academic effort and institutional groundwork, this vision took concrete shape. In 1998, Montfort College was formally established, marking a historic milestone in Indian higher education. In the same year, the College launched India’s first-ever M.Sc. programme in Counseling Psychology, affiliated with Bangalore University—a pioneering initiative that laid the foundation for professional mental health training in the country.
As educational institutions, industries, and social organizations increasingly sought trained counselors for schools, families, hospitals, NGOs, and corporate settings, Montfort College emerged as the first dedicated centre in India for structured counsellor education and training.
The Montfort College logo, inscribed with the word “Sampurna”, symbolizes the institution’s unwavering commitment to holistic education—the complete development of the individual: intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual. Its guiding motto, “Liberation with Enlightenment,” continues to inspire generations of students and educators.
Through the visionary leadership of Bro. Mathew Pannathanath, Montfort College has evolved into a nationally recognized institution for counseling psychology and mental health education. His legacy lives on across continents and disciplines, shaping a new generation of compassionate mental health professionals dedicated to healing, empowerment, and social transformation.
Today, Montfort College stands as a beacon of hope and excellence, carrying forward its founding mission—to respond meaningfully to the emotional, mental, and spiritual needs of modern society through education, research, and service.
