MONTFORT TECHNICAL INSTITUTE, ST. THOMAS MOUNT

Montfort Technical Institute was started by the Montfort Brothers to give employment training to poor Anglo-Indian boys of Alandur and St. Thomas Mount.

In the year 1964, at the invitation of the late Archbishop Dr. Louis Mathias, Rev. Bro. Zephrin (French) came to Madras to start Montfort Technical Institute at Alandur. The Building and the installation of Machines were completed by 1969. The power connection was made in 1970. Bro. Mathew Pannathanath joined the Community on 17th July 1970 and became the Director of the Institute after Bro. Zephrin. Once the machines were installed, job orders were taken up from industries around Madras. The first batch of 22 trainees was recruited in February 1971 for the Turner’s trade. Bro. Joseph Kottoor joined the Brothers the same month and took charge of training. The students were given excellent training in theory and practical. On 8th September 1971, the Institute was blessed by Archbishop Arulappa. In order to give better employment prospects to the trainees,in 1973 the institute applied for Government recognition from the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT). The first batch of four Turners and six welders appeared for the NCVT examinations in July 1974. All of them came out successfully.

In the meantime, there was request from people of the place to start more trades. Since the land at Alandur was not enough to have more trades, a new site was needed. After a lot of search, a plot of land was acquired at St. Thomas Mount and construction was started at the site. Bro. Joseph Kottoor was appointed as the Director and Principal of the institute in July 1978. The Construction at the new site was completed under his able guidance & training was started in August 1982. The DGET approval for Welder, Machinist & Electronics Trades was obtained during this period.

In May 1984, Bro. Selvaraj took charge as Principal & continued to develop the institute. Draughts man Civil Trade was introduced by him in 1985. The building for electronic section was completed & the trade was shifted from the main building to the new one in August 1986.

Rev. Bro. Paul C. C. was appointed Director & Principal in March 1989. Computer Trade was started in August 1989. Co-education was introduced in selected trades like Electronics, Draughtsman civil and Computer.

Rev. Bro. Selvaraj came back as the Director and Principal of the institute in May 1991. In May 1993, Rev. Bro. Abraham P.C. took over as the Principal for a short while. In September 1993, Rev. Bro. George Padikara became the Director & Principal of the institute. He continued in the post till May 1999. The Institute had the maximum number of trainees in each trade during this period.

From May 1999, Rev. Bro. Lawrence Gabriel was appointed as Director of the Institute and Rev. Bro. Joseph Thomas as Principal. The Electrician Trade was started with DGET approval during this period.

Another new development during this period was the starting of a new academic school in the same campus. The new school was inaugurated on 10th June 2002. Rev. Bro. George Vazhayil was appointed as the first Principal of the academic school.

Bro. Lawrence Gabriel and Bro. Joseph Thomas continued in office till 2004. In June 2004 Bro. Jose Kannampuzha took over as Director and Principal of the Institute and remained in office till 2007. In June 2007 Rev. Bro. Oliver Ericatt took over as Director of the Institute and Rev. Bro. Jenny Kuriakose as Principal. From May 2010 Rev. Bro. Jenny Kuriakose was the Director and Principal of the Institute. Rev. Bro. K.M. Thomas took over as Director and Principal in June 2011 and from May 2013

Rev. Bro. K.K.Thomas was Director and Rev.Bro. K.M. Thomas the Principal of the Institution. From May 2014 Rev. Bro.K.K. Thomas was the Director and Rev.Bro. V.U.Thomas the Principal, and from May 2017, Rev.Bro.V.U.Thomas was the Director and Principal of the Institution. From May 2019 Rev.Bro.K.K.Thomas was the Director and Rev. Bro.V.U.Thomas the Principal. From June 2022 it was Rev.Bro Stephen Xavier.At present it is Rev.Bro. Deepan; he is the Principal and Correspondent of the Institution. From May 2023, Rev. Bro. A. Pakiyanathan is the Bursar of the Institution.
